Canada’s COVID-19 Economic Response Plan: New Support to Protect Canadian Jobs - Orphan and Inactive Oil and Gas Wells

As part of the The Government of Canada’s initiative to provide funding to sustain jobs in the energy sector, limited funding is being provided to the Government of Alberta, Government of Saskatchewan, Government of British Columbia, and the Orphan Wells Association.

Alberta’s Site Rehabilitation Program

The Government of Alberta has announced the creation of the Site Rehabilitation Program which provides funding to oil and gas abandonment and/or reclamation projects across Alberta. Funding is limited (up to $1 billion) and is being released in $100 million increments.

Saskatchewan’s Accelerated Site Closure Program

The Government of Saskatchewan has launched the Accelerated Site Closure Program to utilize $400 million in Federal funding. Phase 1 of the program allocated $100 million to eligible licensees. Currently, Phase 2 of the program is in flight and will allocate an additional $200 million to eligible licensees. Future phases of the program will allocate the remaining $100 million.
